If You're in Motion, It's in the Right Direction
Most
days, I have difficulty catching my breath. My wheezing is not the result of a pursuit of physical fitness.
Rather, the exasperated gasps are symptoms of my zealous pursuit of happiness. Sir Isaac Newton's first law of motion states unless an external force is applied to an object, the path and speed of the object
will not be altered. Rather, the object will remain in static motion. Similarly, the
momentum of my pursuit of happiness is in direct proportion to the amount of energy I exert towards my goals. While I do not have a numerical checklist posted on
my refrigerator, I can attest to achieving two of my goals this past year: Travel to the Grand Canyon by car and compete and win a ribbon at the Tulsa State Fair. Both required arduous effort on my part. You may be thinking a trip by car to the Grand Canyon can't be too difficult. Well, try driving 300+ miles each day in a pumpkin-colored compact
car that did not have cruise control, satellite radio reception that disappeared at the Texas state line and each evening
dragging the tent and bulky camping gear out of the aforementioned pumpkin's diminutive back seat to set up camp. It
was indeed an arduous trip and an extraordinary journey. We slept under the stars at the bottom of Palo Duro Canyon, TX, sought respite in the mystical red rocks of Sedona, AZ, and explored the Arizona backcountry from Williams, AZ to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon via a vintage locomotive operated by the Grand Canyon Railway. We hiked the historic Bright Angel trail and witnessed the aloof nature of a threatened species, the California Condor, as it basked in the warmth of both the sunlight and an adoring crowd of onlookers at the Grand Canyon's historic
Kolb Studio. The reluctance to start the long drive home was mitigated with stops in Taos and a trek around the Capulin Volcano in New Mexico. The adventure of my lifetime. As for the Tulsa State Fair award, my first foray into the realm of culinary competition resulted
in a Third Place ribbon for my sweet pickles at last month's fair. The process of pickling a bushel
of Bixby cucumbers entails two days of soaking, rinsing, soaking again and processing to achieve a crunchy-crispy pickle.
The feeling of achievement, be it Third Place, compels me to try harder next time for the blue ribbon. Overall, my life has been fulfilling but not complete.
I plan to continue to explore the possibilities for my life. Helen Keller obviously understood Newton's law of motion when she said “No one has a right to consume happiness without
producing it.” Well, for me, it's two down
and many, many more to go. Your breathless guide,
Jennifer
